REVIEWING INSURANCES & BENEFITS…

Step 1: Gather All Your Current Insurance Policies

  • Common types to check:

    • Car insurance

    • Home/building & contents insurance

    • Life insurance

    • Critical illness cover

    • Income protection

    • Health/dental insurance

    • Pet insurance (if applicable)

    • White Goods

    • Phone/Technology

    • Travel Insurance

  • Locate policy documents or log into providers’ online portals.

Tip: Create a spreadsheet to track providers, premiums, renewal dates, and coverage details.

Step 2: Check Renewal Dates

  • Note all upcoming renewal dates at least 4-6 weeks in advance.

  • Set calendar reminders.

Tip: Shopping around before automatic renewal can save up to 40% on premiums.

Step 3: Evaluate Your Coverage Needs

  • Life changes? New home, child, marriage, or job?

  • Are you over- or under-insured?

  • Are you paying for overlapping coverage (e.g. mobile phone insurance via bank account and separately)?

Tip: Avoid duplicate cover (e.g. travel insurance through bank + standalone policy).

Step 4: Compare Policies and Prices

  • Use UK comparison sites:

    • Compare the Market

    • GoCompare

    • MoneySuperMarket

    • Confused.com

  • Check cashback sites like TopCashback or Quidco for extra savings.

Tip: Always go beyond just the cheapest option – check the excess, what’s covered, and customer reviews.

Step 5: Consider Policy Bundling

  • Some insurers offer multi-policy discounts for bundling (e.g., home + car insurance).

Tip: Call insurers directly and negotiate. Mention quotes from competitors.

Step 6: Review Work Benefits First

  • Your employer might already provide:

    • Life insurance (“death in service” benefit)

    • Private medical or dental

    • Income protection

    • Travel insurance

  • Avoid paying twice!

Tip: Ask your HR department for a full breakdown of your benefits package.

Step 7: Check for Group or Union Insurance Offers

  • Are you part of a union or professional association (like UNISON, RCN, or BMA)?

  • They often offer discounted group insurance rates.

Step 8: CHeck your existing employee benefits

When was the last time you logged in to your employee benefits portal or looked through the list of products, services and providers?

  • Take a look and make sure you’re aware of what is available

  • Ask colleagues what benefits they are using and what ones save time or money

  • Share what ones you’re using too!

Step 9: Review Annually

  • Set a yearly reminder to go through this review.

  • Make sure all policies stay aligned with your lifestyle and financial goals.

Tip: Consider using an app like Emma or Moneyhub to track subscriptions and insurance payments.

Summary

Reviewing your insurance can help you save hundreds per year while ensuring you're properly covered. Start by organising and comparing your current policies, checking for duplicates, and leveraging workplace benefits and discounts. Many employees unknowingly pay for insurance that’s already covered by their job.

Meanwhile, UK employees should familiarise themselves with key benefits like pensions, death in service, and EAPs—these are part of your total compensation and can replace private insurance needs or save significant money.
