finwell guide to:
NOMINATING PENSION BENEFICIARIES…
Step 1: Understand Why It Matters
Pensions usually sit outside your will.
This means if you die, the pension provider/trustees decide where the money goes — unless you’ve nominated someone.
Without a nomination:
Money could take longer to be paid out.
Your wishes might not be followed.
Family disputes can arise.
Some pensions (especially defined contribution schemes) allow a lump-sum payout, which could be tax-free depending on age at death.
✅ Tip: Think of a nomination form as your "mini-will" for your pension pot.
Step 2: Find Out Who Your Current Beneficiaries Are (If Any)
Log in to your pension provider's online portal.
Or ask HR / your pension scheme administrator.
✅ Tip: Some old pensions you forgot about might still exist. Check your full pension history!
Step 3: Complete (or Update) Your Nomination Form
Most pension schemes call this an "Expression of Wish" form.
You'll need:
Full names of beneficiaries
Relationship to you
% split (if multiple beneficiaries)
✅ Tip: You can name anyone — spouse, child, partner, friend, charity — not just family.
Step 4: Update It After Major Life Events
Key times to review your nomination:
Marriage or divorce
Birth or adoption of children
Death of a previous nominee
Major financial changes
✅ Tip: Divorce does not automatically remove your ex from your pension benefits. You must update the nomination!
Step 5: Let People Know Your Wishes
Tell your family or executor that you've made a nomination.
Store copies of any confirmation emails or forms safely.
✅ Tip: While your nomination isn't legally binding, pension trustees strongly consider it and usually follow it unless there’s a major reason not to.
Step 6: Check Each Pension Scheme Separately
Each scheme needs its own nomination form.
Workplace pensions, SIPPs (Self-Invested Personal Pensions), and legacy pensions all require their own paperwork.
✅ Tip: Even if you consolidate pensions, double-check that the new provider has your latest beneficiary details.
Summary
Nominating your pension beneficiaries ensures that your loved ones can access your pension savings quickly, efficiently, and (often) tax-free if you pass away. It's critical because pensions usually do not follow your will.
Regularly updating your "Expression of Wish" forms after life changes — like marriage, kids, or divorce — avoids confusion, delays, and family disputes. It's one of the simplest but most impactful financial actions you can take to protect your family.
